Flags Adorning Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial2400 N. Flagler Dr. (Currie Park)
1. NEW YORK - To recall Harlem, where King survived assassination attempt. Donated by CH2MHILL. 2. TENNESSEE - To recall Memphis, where King was killed while supporting' striking garbage workers. The flag's three stars represent East, Middle, and West Tennessee. Donated by Waste Management of Palm Beach. 3. UNITED NATIONS - To represent the world acclaim King won. The map of the world is surrounded by a wreath of olive branches, symbolizing peace. Donated by Camp Dresser & McKee, Inc. 4. METHODIST CHURCH - Donated by Trinity United Methodist Church of West Palm Beach. The cross and flame insignia, adopted in 1971, represents Christ and the Holy Spirit. Donated by Trinity United Methodtst Church. 5. ALABAMA - Reflecting the state where the modem civil rights movement began with the Montgomery bus boycott. The crimson cross on a white field, adopted in 1895, echoes the Confederate battle flag. Donated by Mock, Roos & Associates, Inc. 6. ETHIOPIA - The laced star on a blue disc which is also the country's seal, was added to the flag in 1996. It is still flown without the seal in many parts of the East African country. Donated by Bob Sanders. 7. HAITI - This Caribbean republic's flag is almost exactly like the flag of Lichtenstein, which has a gold crown in the blue field. Donated by R.C.T. Engineering, Inc. 8. ISRAEL - The Star of David, ancient symbol of Judaism, rests between the blue and white colors of a tal/it, or prayer shawl. Donated by Bob & Maureen L. Sanders. 9. NORWAY - The country that presented King with- the Nobel Peace Prize. First used on merchant ships in 1821, it became the nation's flag in 1898. Donated by PGA of America. 10. SOUTH AFRICA - Adopted in 1994 after the country's first all-race elections, the flag symbolizes the country's people joining in unity. Donated by Searcy, Denney, Scarola, Barnhart & Shipley P.A. 11. UNITED STATES - All the other flags are 3-by-5 feet and fly from 20-foot poles. Old Glory is 4-by-6 feet on a 25-foot pole. Donated by American Legion Post 12. 12. AFRO-AMERICAN FLAG - Created in 1920 by Marcus Garvey, the red stripe stands for the common blood of all people, the black for the African people, and green for a bright future. Donated by T.L. Wingate/Sec. Of Labor, Mary B. Hooks. 13. WASHINGTON, D.C. - The City where King delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech. The design, adopted in 1938, is based on George Washington's coat of arms. Donated by The Palm Beach Post. 14. FLORIDA - Adopted in 1899, it bears the state seal, and Indian maiden strewing flowers before the state tree, the Sabal Palm. Donated by Northern Trust Bank. 15. OHIO - Home of Oberlin College, first co-educational college to admit both women and blacks, as well as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The triangle represents the state's hills and valleys, the stripes its roads and waterways. Donated by Renaissance Partners. 16. ILLINOIS - To recall King's confrontation with the Klu Klux Klan while marching in' Cicero. Donated by UA Parking. 17. ALPHA PHI ALPHA - The nation's oldest black fraternity, of which King was a member. Donated by Delta Delta Lambda, its West Palm Beach chapter. 18. EARTH FLAG - The planet surroundp.d by a blue field. Donated by Browning Ferris IND./BFI. 19. JAMAICA - Donated by the United Sports & Social Club. 20. PEACE - The most popular explanation for this. famous symbol claims it was formed by placing the international flag symbols for Nand 0 atop each other, for Nuclear Disarmament.
