MLK, Jr. Coordinating Committee of West Palm Beach, FL Print

The MLK Celebration in January and subsequent MLKCC events held throughout the year, serve two purposes (1) To expand the cultural program for students centered around the principals by which Dr. King lived his life; and (2) To utilize, introduce and promote the use of the MLK Memorial Park to members of the community. The MLK Memorial Park will be the focal point of many celebrations as it emerges as one of the major cultural sites in Palm Beach County. Because of its historical importance, we expect to expand our outreach to include a more diverse population.

The art, oratory, essay and performing arts contest of MLK Week in January, adopted by the Palm Beach County School District, targets students in grades K-12. The contests are introduced to all teachers and students within Palm Beach County. Flyers and poster placed throughout the community and in CTA newsletters, along with in-kind advertising by Palm Beach Post, Sun Sentinel, Channel 5 TV, Channel 12 TV, TV-20, Fidelity Federal Savings Bank, Moyle & Flannigan, ACLU, Jewish Federation, and WILPF, also assist in promoting active student participation. Outreach efforts, have and are expected to continue to reach students and help them to learn about (1) Dr. King and his teachings; (2) multiculturalism and respect for diversity; and (3) the cultural arts. The program has resulted in the discovery and enhancement of leadership and artistic talents by the students involved in the various MLKCC contests.

Because MLKCC's mission is to provide cultural activities to honor Dr. King and to enable people to reflect on his life and his teachings through education, performances, exhibitions and events, MLK week 2007 will not only provide multi-cultural activities for audiences, but will also enable students and adult participants to learn more about the power of non-violence; tolerance of diversity; and assist them with a greater capacity to love. Participation in the annual event grows each year and impacts the cultural heritage of the county, achieving a focused move toward racial harmony among all citizens.

Over 100 businesses, organizations and individuals remain co-sponsors and continue to turn out in greater numbers to see the memorial park, artist performances, and exhibitions.
