2011 Calendar of Events
Theme:
"Change We Can Believe, Change We Must Achieve"

Each year in January the Martin Luther King, Jr. Coordinating Committee sponsors a series of activities commemorating the civil rights movement and the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All but one of these activities is free to the public. There is a cost for the scholarship sit down breakfast which is held at the West Palm Beach Convention Center.

   
Kick-Off Reception
Friday January 7, 2011

This is the opening program for the activities. There is usually a speaker, young people performing and a welcome to the program. Many elected dignitaries attend in support of the program.

Basketball Tournament Saturday January 8, 2011

This activity which is held at the Salvation Army gives our young people an opportunity to compete in sports and have fun.

Candlelight Service

This very moving spiritual ceremony is held at the MLK memorial and is sponsored by Greater Antioch Baptist Church. There is a special dynamic speaker and a city wide choir performance. The program ends with candlelight visual and a song” We shall overcome.”

This is a fun filled afternoon where Dr, King is honored by a lively athletic activity sponsored by the Jamaican Community.

Unity Service
Sunday January 9, 2011

This service brings the community through worship. Our young people come with praise dancing and other performance. Various ethnic nationalities are represented at this service.

Freedom Celebration Wednesday January 12, 2011

St. Anne’s Catholic Church sponsors this celebration that helps us remember all the struggle and adversities we overcome for freedom. This celebration allows for all faiths and youth to pay homage to Dr. King through song, dance, poetry and readings.

Art Contest
Friday January 14, 2011

All children in Palm beach County schools both public and private are invited to share this talent by participating in this activity. There are specific guidelines for this activity. All art work is on display at the Classroom teachers Association Building. Prizes are awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The public is invited and encouraged to view the student’s art.

Performing Arts Contest

This is a contest where many talented students in the community perform. This contest is open to students in both public and private schools from all grade levels. The talents come from student dancers, pianists, singers, magicians, and other great talents.

Gospel Fest

This is a clapping, roaring good time for lovers of gospel music.

MLK Breakfast
Monday January 17, 2011

This is the crowning jewel of our Martin Luther King, Jr. Activities. At the breakfast our students who have won prizes in art performing arts are recognized. The senior winner of the oratorical contest performs his/her speech before a larger audience. Citizens in the community are also recognized for their service. There is usually a speaker that has been brought in to address the group.

Peace Camp
JUNE  - AUGUST  2011

The summer Peace camp is held June – August annually. It takes behavioral modification and includes field trips.
